During the last 18 months I’ve cut the television off…

I stopped watching the NBA Finals. It made my mornings after games that were played pretty exciting. I couldn’t wait to find out who won the game the previous night. I remember when the Cavaliers were down 3-1 and came back. I didn’t watch any of those games! I was nervous waking up the next day to see who won.

I didn’t watch election night. I woke up with curiousity about who won.

But this is different. Hurricane Harvey has changed everything.  Every morning since Saturday I’ve woken up with some doubt and fear. Have you?

What’s the weather look like?

Every. Night…

Now it’s worse…

I know too many people who have lost their homes. They have lost EVERYTHING! But then a thought came rushing through my head.

“I wonder if I will have a place to go home to?” I’m having some doubts.

But at the same time I have a ton of condfidence. How can that be?

Because of the promises of God!

He’s so powerful! One passage is running through my mind. It’s Hebrews 13:5-6…

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

This hurricane has become a spiritual test for me. Will I become paralyzed with doubt and fear or will I press forward?

Is my faith as strong as I think it is?

Will I continue to worship God?

Will I turn my back on God?

Where have I been laying up my treasure? On earth or in heaven?

I must drive the rest of the doubt out. Because of my God I can have great confidence.

This hurricane will pass. I will see what remains at home. I will also see what remains of my faith!

While I may still wake up with some doubts, my confidence will be greater.

My God is in control. He will always provide for me.

Last night we talked about what good may come from this hurricane. Here are some of the thoughts that we had.

1. This hurricane allows us to evaluate our faith. It will help is to make the necessary changes.

2. This hurricane will scatter people and at the same time will allow the gospel to be spread. Christians will be forced to move and at the same time will have more opportunities to spread Gods word!

3. People have been able to see what Love looks like. Actions speak louder than words!!!

4.Many have been forced to rely even more on God and others. This is a good thing. We need one another.

5. Our doubts (including mine) are being driven out as we have to rely on Gods power.

You may have still have doubts. That’s normal. But remember the confidence that you can have in God!
