Stories of Courage: When God’s People Step Up
The Bible is full of people who had every reason to fear—but chose courage instead.
Joshua wasn’t the only one. Think about Paul. After being stoned and left for dead in Acts 14:19–20, he got up and went right back into the city. Yet even Paul needed reassurance. In Acts 18:9–11, the Lord told him, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking.”
Then there’s Timothy—young, timid, facing a tough assignment in Ephesus. Paul reminded him in 2 Timothy 1:7 that God had given him “a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Courage doesn’t mean avoiding suffering. Sometimes it means embracing it for a greater purpose.
Peter? He had the faith to walk on water—and the fear to sink. Jesus called him out for doubting (Matthew 14:31), but He also reached out and saved him.
Esther risked her life with quiet bravery. “If I perish, I perish,” she said (Esther 4:16).
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood firm in the fire. “Even if He does not deliver us,” they said, “we will not serve your gods” (Daniel 3:18).
And Jesus—our perfect model—showed courage in Gethsemane. “Not My will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42).
Let’s not forget modern-day courage:
- The single mom who worships faithfully every week.
- The teen who says “no” to peer pressure.
- The spouse who chooses forgiveness.
- The believer who confesses sin and asks for help.
