Godly Mothers
Mothers shape the hearts of children long before the world ever sees their influence. Behind many faithful men and women in Scripture stood mothers who feared God, trusted His promises, and sacrificed greatly for their families. As we reflect upon godly mothers, we are reminded that motherhood is not simply about providing meals, rides, and routines. It is about shaping souls for eternity.
One of the greatest examples of a godly mother is Jochebed (Numbers 26:59), the mother of Moses. Pharaoh had commanded that Hebrew baby boys be killed, yet Jochebed refused to surrender her child to fear. Hebrews 11:23 says, “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents.” Imagine the courage it took to hide a baby during such dangerous times. Eventually, she placed Moses in an ark of bulrushes along the riverbank, trusting God with what she could no longer control (Exodus 2:1–10). God not only protected Moses, but allowed Jochebed to nurse and influence him during his early years. Her faith helped prepare a deliverer for Israel. Godly mothers understand that their influence may reach far beyond what they can currently see. We also think about Hannah, a woman who longed deeply for a child.
In 1 Samuel 1, Hannah prayed with tears and sincerity before God. She promised that if God blessed her with a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord. God answered her prayer with Samuel. True to her word, Hannah brought Samuel to serve in the house of the Lord while he was still young. That could not have been easy. Yet Hannah understood that children ultimately belong to God. Her faith and dedication helped raise one of Israel’s greatest prophets and leaders. Godly mothers teach their children to serve the Lord, even when sacrifice is involved.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, also provides a beautiful example of humble faith. When the angel told her she would give birth to the Son of God, she responded, “Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38).” Mary did not fully understand everything that would happen, but she trusted God completely. She watched Jesus grow, listened to His wisdom, witnessed His ministry, and eventually stood near the cross during His suffering. Mary experienced both joy and heartbreak as a mother, yet she remained faithful. Godly mothers continue trusting God through every season of life.
The influence of a godly mother cannot be measured merely by worldly success. A faithful mother teaches children to pray, worship, love truth, and trust God. Often, the lessons children remember most are not elaborate speeches, but daily examples of kindness, sacrifice, patience, and faithfulness. Many of us can look back and remember mothers or grandmothers who prayed for us, corrected us, encouraged us, and pointed us toward Christ. Their impact continues long after childhood. Proverbs 31:28 says, “Her children arise up, and call her blessed.”
God sees every unseen sacrifice, every sleepless night, every prayer whispered on behalf of a child. In a world that often undervalues motherhood, Scripture continually honors it. Godly mothers are builders of homes, teachers of truth, and examples of faith. Whether like Jochebed showing courage, Hannah demonstrating dedication, or Mary displaying humble trust, faithful mothers leave a legacy that reaches generations. May we honor and appreciate the godly mothers among us. And may mothers everywhere be encouraged to know that their labor in the Lord is never in vain.
