Does Satan Know Everything?

“Does Satan know everything?”

How would you answer that? Let’s see what’s recorded about Satan in Job.

⁶ Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and ^[a]Satan also came among them. ⁷ The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” ⁸ The Lord said to Satan, “Have you ^[b]considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, ^[c]fearing God and turning away from evil.” ⁹ Then Satan answered the ^[d]Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? ¹⁰ Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. ¹¹ But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” ¹² Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your ^[e]power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord. Job 1:6-12

The second time we read about Satan is in Job 2:1-7. Here it says,

2 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. ² The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” ³ The Lord said to Satan, “Have you ^[a]considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man ^[b]fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ^[c]ruin him without cause.” ⁴ Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life. ⁵ However, put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face.” ⁶ So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your ^[d]power, only spare his life.” ⁷ Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

We can learn a great deal about Satan from these verses.

1. Satan is real! Just as the Father interacted with Satan in Job, we see it was also Jesus while being tempted who interacted with Satan, Matthew 4:1-11. One of the great deceptions of Satan is getting people to think that he doesn’t exist. He’s the father of all lies, John 8:44. Satan is real.
2. Satan is our adversary. There’s nothing good that can be said about Satan in Job or anywhere else in the Bible. He has been opposed to mankind from the beginning, Genesis 3:1-7. He seeks to hurt, harm, and destroy! In Zechariah 3:1 it says, “Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.” Satan is our accuser and our adversary.
3. Satan does have some knowledge.
   1. Satan is knowledgeable about some things. He knew some things about Job. He knew God had made a hedge around Job and had richly blessed him. Satan knows scripture as seen when he tempted Jesus in Matthew 4:6. In the Garden, Satan said to Eve, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” Satan was aware of the command. 
   1. We know that he has a presence on the earth as the scriptures show that he roams about the earth.
4. We learn that Satan is NOT ALL POWERFUL. Before he could do anything to Job, he had to be granted permission from God, Job 1:12. There were boundaries that the LORD made for Satan, and we see that Satan stayed within those boundaries.
5. We learn that Satan is NOT ALL KNOWING! He believed that Job would curse God to his face if he lost all he had, Job 1:11. But Job didn’t, Job 1:20-22. If Satan was all knowing, he would have known in advance what Job would have done.

I think what most really want to know is whether or not Satan knows all of our thoughts. The answer is No! But God does! It is God who searches us and knows us, Psalm 139:1. It is God who knows when we sit down and when we rise up, Psalm 139:2.

Satan will seek to tempt us to sin, but the good news is we can resist him, James 4:7. When we do, he will flee! He’s NOT ALL KNOWING! He’s NOT ALL POWERFUL! He’s NOT ETERNAL! Let’s trust in the one who is, John 1:1.
