Those are the words that are found in Proverbs 5:19. King Solomon was talking to his son, Proverbs 5:1.
It was a conversation that would make a lot of fathers very uncomfortable today. And yet it’s a conversation that dad’s need to have with their sons. It was a conversation about women.
In Proverbs 5:1-4 Solomon said, “My son, give attention to my wisdom, incline your ear to my understanding; That you may observe discretion and your lips may reserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey and smoother than oil is her speech. But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.”
Solomon warned his son about the adulteress woman. He warned and encouraged his son to stay far away from her, Proverbs 5:8. You can hear the sense of urgency in his words. Please, please, son don’t be deceived by the lust of the flesh. You will reap what you sow. Going down this path of adultery will only bring about tough days for you.
Then Solomon instructed his son to stay and enjoy HIS WIFE! I’m sure some may have been wondering what this post would be about with a title that says, “Let her breasts satisfy you…” But that’s what Solomon would encourage his son to do.
In Proverbs 5:15-19 Solomon said, “Drink water from your own cistern and fresh water from your own well. Should your springs be dispersed abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let them be yours alone and not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, and REJOICE in the WIFE of your YOUTH. As a loving hind and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy you at all times…”
The sexual relationship is meant to be enjoyed in marriage. One man and one woman. It is a blessing. It is to be satisfying. WOW!!! This is so great! I think Proverbs 5:19 is my favorite Bible verse!
I never had the “TALK” with my dad. We didn’t talk about sex AT ALL. I wonder how many young men had the same experience. I’ve been thinking about how I will approach this subject with my Joshua as he gets older. One thing I do know is this. I will not have just “ONE TALK.” Not even Solomon did that. This would not be the only time he would talk to his son about the sexual relationship. Why are we so uncomfortable talking about the sexual relationship, when the Holy Spirit says so much about it?
We need to be having conversations like this with our children. I understand there is an appropriate time for them too. What’s interesting is how much Solomon discussed this topic. He not only gave his son warnings about women to avoid, but he also focused on the positives about the sexual relationship in marriage. There was a nice balance with what he shared with his son. What a great template for us as fathers to follow. The same could be said with respect to mothers to as they talk about the sexual relationship with their daughters.
The Bible is filled with examples for us to follow! We should use them.
I left something out from Proverbs 5:19 that I want to conclude with now. Solomon would go on to say, “…BE EXHILARATED ALWAYS WITH HER LOVE. For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress and embrace the bosom of a foreigner?” WOW! In the margin of my Bible it says “INTOXICATED” for the word EXHILARATED.
Son, stay with your wife. Enjoy the sexual relationship, the intimacy, and the love between you and your wife. Don’t look for these things in someone else. Don’t turn to pornography to be exhilarated. You will get hurt if you do. Keep working on your relationship with your wife, and enjoy the union, the intimacy that the two of you are to have.
I wonder how many couples are intoxicated with the intimacy they have with one another? It is something that husband and wife have to work on. It is something that will need to be ongoing.
It is something for married couples to enjoy!
